Exceptionally beautifully made mahogany cabinet from the Directoire.
High-quality furniture makers' work.
A transition period from the Louis 16th period to the Empire, at the end of the 18th century.
The base cabinet is 'single curved', the top drawer is straight, the second only has a bend
and the third has an outward curve.
Also very nice corners in which the curve continues.
Beautiful and expert stitchwork on the doors and other parts.
See photos.
To the left and right of the doors we see semi-circular pilasters with Corinthian capitals (also borrowed from classical Greek antiquity) cast in brass.
The mahogany has been specially selected and mirrored like a book (livere ouvert).
placed next to each other to create a beautiful symmetry.
The hood is crowned with an open pediment - a trope from classical antiquity - classicism.
We also see this classicism further back in the Empire.
This cabinet is a style-iconic work of art.
The lock is original and the key works.
Inside several drawers and shelves made of quartersawn oak.
A very practical piece of furniture.
An oak back.
